Dental Hygiene 101: Best Practices for a Healthy Mouth
Having a healthy mouth is essential for your overall well-being. Taking good care of your teeth and gums helps you avoid problems like cavities, gum disease, and bad breath. Plus, a bright, clean smile can boost your confidence and make a great impression. In this guide, we’ll cover the best practices for maintaining excellent dental hygiene. We’ll also share some interesting facts and statistics about dental health that even a 6th grader can understand.
The Importance of Brushing Your Teeth
Brushing your teeth is the foundation of good dental hygiene. It helps remove food particles and plaque, a sticky film of bacteria that can cause cavities and gum disease. You should brush your teeth at least twice a day, in the morning and before bed. Use a toothbrush with soft bristles and fluoride toothpaste, which helps strengthen your teeth and prevent decay.
A study by the American Dental Association found that only 70% of people brush their teeth twice a day. That means 30% of people are not brushing enough, which can lead to dental problems. Make sure you brush all surfaces of your teeth – the fronts, the backs, and the chewing surfaces – and don’t forget to brush your tongue, too. This helps get rid of bacteria that can cause bad breath.
The Right Way to Floss
Flossing is just as important as brushing, even though many people skip it. Flossing removes food particles and plaque from between your teeth and under your gumline, where your toothbrush can’t reach. You should floss at least once a day.
Take about 18 inches of floss and wind most of it around your middle fingers, leaving a few inches to work with. Gently slide the floss between your teeth, curving it around each tooth and moving it up and down. Be careful not to snap the floss into your gums, as this can cause irritation.
According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), only 30% of Americans floss daily. By making flossing a part of your daily routine, you can significantly improve your dental health and prevent gum disease.
The Benefits of Regular Dental Check-Ups
Visiting your dentist regularly is crucial for maintaining a healthy mouth. Dentists can spot problems early, clean your teeth more thoroughly than you can at home, and provide treatments to keep your teeth and gums healthy. You should see your dentist for a check-up and cleaning every six months.
During a dental check-up, your dentist will examine your teeth, gums, and mouth for any signs of problems. They might take X-rays to look for cavities or other issues that can’t be seen with the naked eye. A professional cleaning will remove plaque and tartar, which can build up even if you brush and floss regularly.
The American Dental Association reports that about 100 million Americans don’t see a dentist each year. Regular dental visits can help catch issues early and save you from more extensive and costly treatments later on.
Healthy Eating for Healthy Teeth
What you eat plays a big role in your dental health. Foods high in sugar and starch can lead to cavities because they provide fuel for the bacteria in your mouth. Instead, choose a balanced diet with plenty of fruits, vegetables, lean proteins, and whole grains.
Dairy products like milk, cheese, and yogurt are great for your teeth because they contain calcium and phosphorus, which help strengthen your tooth enamel. Crunchy fruits and vegetables, like apples and carrots, can help clean your teeth as you eat them and stimulate your gums.
Drinking water is also important for your dental health. Water helps wash away food particles and keeps your mouth moist, which is essential for preventing tooth decay. Fluoridated water can also help strengthen your teeth.
Protecting Your Teeth During Sports
If you play sports, it’s important to protect your teeth from injury. Wearing a mouthguard can help prevent broken teeth, cut lips, and other mouth injuries. Mouthguards are especially important for contact sports like football, hockey, and basketball, but they can also be useful for non-contact sports like skateboarding or gymnastics.
You can buy a mouthguard at a sporting goods store, or your dentist can make a custom-fitted one for you. Custom mouthguards are usually more comfortable and provide better protection.
Avoiding Harmful Habits
Certain habits can harm your teeth and gums. Smoking and using tobacco products can cause gum disease, tooth decay, and even oral cancer. Quitting smoking can significantly improve your dental health and overall well-being.
Chewing on hard objects like ice, pens, or your fingernails can also damage your teeth. These habits can cause your teeth to chip or crack. If you have a habit of grinding your teeth, especially at night, talk to your dentist. They may recommend a night guard to protect your teeth while you sleep.
Teaching Kids Good Dental Habits
It’s important to start teaching kids good dental habits early. Children should start brushing their teeth as soon as their first tooth appears. Parents can help by brushing their child’s teeth until they are old enough to do it themselves, usually around age 6 or 7.
Make brushing and flossing fun for kids by letting them pick out their own toothbrush and toothpaste. There are many kid-friendly options available with fun colors and characters. You can also use apps or songs to make brushing for two minutes more enjoyable.
The Role of Fluoride in Dental Health
Fluoride is a natural mineral that helps strengthen tooth enamel and prevent cavities. It can be found in toothpaste, mouth rinses, and many public water supplies. Using fluoride toothpaste and drinking fluoridated water can significantly reduce your risk of tooth decay.
According to the CDC, fluoridated water has been shown to reduce tooth decay by about 25% in children and adults. If your water supply isn’t fluoridated, talk to your dentist about other ways to get fluoride, such as fluoride treatments or supplements.
The Importance of a Healthy Mouth for Overall Health
Your oral health is closely linked to your overall health. Problems in your mouth can affect the rest of your body. For example, gum disease has been linked to heart disease, diabetes, and respiratory infections. Taking good care of your teeth and gums can help you stay healthy and prevent other health problems.

ONE INSTANT COMMISSION SPOT OPEN
SOLD
But I might open more of these in the future if I get more crispy dental bills
I'm opening one slot for a smaller commission to do immediately between my other work. Where I live the public healthcare is jammed and since it took a week for me to get into any kind of contact with them and I would've had to wait til next year for a dentist appointment, I went to a private dentist. It was very fast but also pricey.
I'm hoping to fix the dent in my wallet a little, so, now is your chance to get past the queue if you have a smaller commission in mind!
AVAILABLE:
Simple composition (similar to my swordtember style) 80€
Waist up line art portrait without background 80€
Two sketches 80€ (40€ per sketch)
(latter can be split into two slots if there's interest)
If interested, send me an email at artharakka(at)gmail.com 🧡
#commission#commission info#one visit to private dentist wouldn't be that bad alone but sighhh I got a small injury that will require further visits#and most probably a small surgery#which I know will be costly since this was already over 100€ and they didn't do anything but look in my mouth and sent my info further#social accistance will cover only around 10-30€#and my insurance doesn't cover dental injuries for whatever reason

I like thinking about Tommy being the touchy-feely one. He always has to have some part of his body on Buck. Hand on the small of his back when they navigate through a crowd or are walking in/out of somewhere, intertwining their fingers while they walk down the street, bumping their knees at a dinner table, arm around his shoulders while they watch a movie, light touches to the elbow when they’re in a group.
He’s naturally the big spoon. He’s bigger, he’s used to it and he loves it bc he loves touching Buck. Buck revels in the new experience.
But one night after a truly terrible day , Buck tells Tommy to face the opposite way. He pushes himself so tightly against Tommy’s body , wraps his arm around his waist and presses kisses to his shoulder . Tommy relaxes into his touch and Buck whispers in his ear “It’s okay. I got you.”
The tears come for a little while but Tommy feels so safe and loved that it doesn’t take long for him to drift off to sleep.

Most dental tools work off the placebo effect, as the human body is able to subconsciously alter the structure of teeth under certain circumstances, but this phenomenon has yet to be consciously replicable.
